For a few weeks each year, an immense stretch of salt in Utah becomes a place built around a singular purpose: going faster.
People arrive carrying machines they have spent years building, along with trucks, trailers, tools, folding chairs, spare parts, and everything necessary to keep them running. Workshops appear where there were none. People work, wait, repair, talk, improvise, and try again.
I first went to Bonneville in 2021 expecting to photograph the cars. Looking back years later, I realized I was often photographing something else—the strange temporary world people create around them.
Against a landscape this vast, even our greatest ambitions become small. Eventually the people and machines leave.
What remains is the salt, and the evidence that we were there.
